  1. The Guardian notwithstanding, I've never heard the present period called a "Mormon moment". If anything, it's a moment of rising fundamentalist militancy (though not rising influence), and fundamentalist anti-Mormonism is going to be a big problem for Romney -- and Huntsman too, if he ever makes it into the big leagues.

The irony is that Mormons might actually win some sympathy from the left because of the fundies' hostility to them -- were it not for their high-profile support for anti-gay politics.

  2. Infidel753 -- I think you bring up important points regarding the way fundamentalists see Mormonism. Things could get awkward if either goes far in the 2012 election.

  3. I read the article in the post below about Romney's worship of Cleon Skousen. My own father has a bunch of Skousen books and is on the same fundamentalist page (no pun intended). It's a crazy world view shared by many Mormons.

The article in the Florida Independent re. the proposed constitutional amendment: Wow. It is insane how religious interests distort the First Amendment, intending to eliminate the separation of church and state, yet pretending (believing?) they are promoting First Amendment protections. Insanity.

  4. Cognitive Dissenter -- Skousen is respected among mainstream Mormons? I've heard his name alongside Beck's, but I didn't realize his reputation was that big among the LDS.

  5. Ahab, Skousen is definitely respected among mainstream Mormons. But understand that the "Mormon mainstream" is far to the right of the American mainstream. I find it ironic that so many Mormons are offended by the BOM musical on Broadway, but still want to capitalize on its popularity.

  6. Oh yeah, he's considered an authoritative gospel scholar and is the equivalent of Mormon royalty. See,

  8. The Christian Right is rallying behind Rick Perry? Rick Perry?

Ahab, is this some new strategy to bring on the Apocalypse?
