Yesterday I read the story about the Alabama mayor and city council that turn ownership of their town over to God. It's amazing how much money, power, and real estate an invisible man who lives in the sky has compared to the rest of us.
ReplyDeleteHow can I get me a gig like that? Maybe I should start selling prayers and holy crystals and magic underwear via the internet?
Agi Tater -- Hey, other people make money that way. Go for it! $$$
DeleteOnly God can stop same-sex marriage now
ReplyDeleteIf that's what they're counting on, they're out of luck. Dude barely seems able to manifest himself on the occasional piece of toast these days.
Infidel -- If there is a God, I don't think he's in a hurry to aid their cause.
DeleteLoved the piece about the skeptic's Better News Club. How refreshing during our daily deluge of right wing baloney.
ReplyDeleteDonna -- The fundamentalist Christians must be annoyed that they don't have a corner on the youth anymore.
DeleteThat interview with Cardinal Burke was interesting - as someone who was brought up Catholic, I'm always curious to find out what fresh new craziness is going on in the RCC! Had a bit of a poke around that "New Emangelization" site that the interview originally appeared on - that was interesting too. I must admit that I've long been morbidly fascinated with those individuals who claim that the Catholic Church (hell, Christianity in general) is becoming too "feminized" nowadays. I think part of it comes from realizing that guys like me (ie cross-dressers) must be completely beyond the pale to such folk!
ReplyDeleteFunnily enough, I had a grandfather who once believed I was destined to become a priest, and only hoped he'd live long enough to see the day come. Unfortunately, he's been dead nearly thirty years now, and his dream that I'd become a priest some day seems even more distant now than it did when he was still alive (wish I knew what made him decide that was my calling in life!). Can't say it was the women I encountered at church who put me off the idea, though, just as I can't say it's feminism's "fault" that I've never gotten married (indeed, I'm positively creeped out by all those MRA-types who claim they're not married because women aren't submissive and "feminine" enough any more).
Zosimus -- Burke's thinking reflects hatred for women and for anyone else who doesn't fit into stereotypical masculinity. I think misogynist jerks in the church are a bigger problem.
DeleteSadly, Burke wasn't the first sexist idiot to complain that the church has allegedly become "feminized". For example...
