My eyes went right to that belief.net piece. Contrary to popular belief, "under God" was added to the Pledge of Allegiance in 1954. (Of course, the thoughtful people who read R of G probably already know that.)

Donna -- I too am uncomfortable with the "under God" part of the Pledge of Allegiance, as well as "In God We Trust" on American currency. Some fundamentalists are fond of pointing to it as evidence that the U.S. is a "Christian nation," but as you pointed out, that part of the Pledge was a relatively recent addition.
