Religious Right Tweets Following the Orlando Massacre

During the early morning hours of Sunday, June 12, a gunman opened fire on people at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida, killing 50 people and wounding 53 others, according to CNN. The reported shooter has been identified as Omar Saddiqui Mateen, a 29 year-old man from Fort Pierce, Florida. Before exploring the massacre in depth, I'd like to share some tweets from Religious Right figures in the aftermath of the tragedy. Religious Right responses have been both supportive and hateful.

UPDATE: Texas Governor Dan Patrick posted a Tweet earlier today that read, "Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. Galatians 6:7." He has since deleted the Tweet amidst backlash, according to the Houston Chronicle.

    Patrick's tweet was the only really sincere one, I think. Plenty of Dominionist and fundamentalist preachers have called for application of the Biblical death penalty for homosexuality, and some, such as Kevin Swanson have been courted by top-level Republican politicians. You've documented a lot of that right here on this blog. Mateen may have followed a slightly different religion, but he was putting into practice what they preach.

      Infidel -- Religious Right figures who are suddenly compassionate toward the Orlando victims are being disingenuous (assuming that their compassion isn't feigned). For years, they've promoted homophobia, spread myths about LGBTQ people, and even advocated for their deaths, as you noted. Now they suddenly care about their LGBTQ neighbors? Please.

      In a future post, I plan on exploring the Religious Right response to the fact that a gay nightclub was targeted. From what I've seen so far, their mental acrobatics have to be seen to be believed,
