Regarding the Salt Lake Tribune piece and how Mormon teachings "may be aiding and abetting rape culture."
ReplyDeleteThere is no "may" about it. Victim blaming runs deep in the underlying doctrine and the culture, both of which are extremely toxic to females. Young girls are taught from at least 12-years-old that they need to dress and behave modestly so they won't tempt men. It is always the girl's/woman's responsibility. Always her fault.
On a personal note, I remember vividly the day one of my male family members - who was also a local religious leader - told me that women are the root of all sin. If only there were no women on this planet, men would be perfect angels. I could share dozens of stories about women and girls who are victims of sexual abuse/assault and in addition to being told to keep it private, were also informed it was their fault.
To the extent that the Mormon Church leadership is acknowledging these toxic beliefs (not much), it is only because they are forced to.
Agi Tater -- In so many ways, Mormon culture has twisted ideas about sexuality. From LDS homophobia, to unhealthy ideas about marriage, to victim-blaming attitudes such as these, Mormonism is mired in toxic beliefs that cause untold suffering. Mormons needs to scrap this and start anew.
