From the last link:
ReplyDeleteSharon Slater, American anti-gay activist and president of Family Watch International, recently encouraged delegates attending a law conference in Lagos, Nigeria to resist the United Nations’ calls to decriminalize homosexuality.....In Nigeria, homosexual behavior is illegal and punishable by up to 14 years in prison. In the Islamic North, where Sharia law is enforced, gays can be sentenced to death by stoning.
And there you have it -- the American Christian Right aligning itself with SharĂ®'ah. As always, the various flavors of religious bigot reveal themselves as much more alike than different.
Infidel753 -- On issues such as LGBTQ rights, women's equality, and creationism, the similarities are uncanny.
DeleteI had not heard that the US Catholic Bishops were criticizing the Violence Against Women Act. That is deplorable on so many levels. The RCC is so out of touch with reality it is amazing...what is more amazing is that this seems to be expanding instead of correcting. I suppose that is good for anti-theist atheists like myself---perhaps more Catholics will leave the Church as a result...but...come on! Get it together people and stop trying to make the world more miserable for the rest of us!
ReplyDeleteReasonBeing -- It's revealing, isn't it?They object to a bill that helps victims of violence because it acknowledges the existence of LGBTQ people and expects religious groups to play by the same rules as everyone else.
DeleteOn the Mother Jones piece, I can't believe anyone would complain that a politician, or a potential politician (Ashley Judd), is "obsessed with rape." What does this imply, that she should be neutral on the subject? Conservatives need to stop talking about rape, for crying out loud.
ReplyDeleteDonna -- They really do. Every time some right-winger brings up the subject, s/he says something completely tone deaf.
DeleteI find it almost too appalling for words that a church riddled with so much scandal because of generations of forcible child sex abuse and protecting the perpetrators pretends it has any moral authority to speak out on any issue, especially against legislation crafted to protect some of society's most vulnerable victims. Reprehensible.
ReplyDeleteHere's another link for you Ahab. Read some of the comments for a good laugh. : )

Agi Tater -- Good to see you again. I'm always happy when you visit Republic of Gilead.
DeleteI too think that the church needs to clean up its own house before it can have moral credibility on the issue.
