If he views religious liberals as atheists, I can imagine how he would characterize me and my unbelieving brethren and sistren. :)Michellehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09591981716535134038noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5077809256320470141.post-61797557707314747382013-07-08T10:25:29.714-04:002013-07-08T10:25:29.714-04:00Wise Fool -- Thanks! This was probably the most draining of all my infiltrations, but also the most plentiful in terms of content for the blog.

I hadn't considered that angle on Cotton Mather's slave writings, so I appreciate your thoughts. Thanks for your effort!

It would be tough for Brown to blast Cotton Mathers about the witchcraft thing when that is a Biblical world view. :-)

I would also offer that, while it is ridiculous to free slaves (through the Gospel) while keeping them in chains (even though, indeed, the New Testament does not speak against slavery), I think Cotton should get some partial credit on the "Negro Christianized" work. That was in a time when a chunk of the population considered the slaves to be less than human, or, at least, not a type of human worthy of common human dignity. So for Cotton to not only view them as human, but also consider them potentially worthy of eternal salvation, was fairly progressive thinking back then.TWFhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06016277303703254572noreply@blogger.com
