Cleaning the House of Ahab

I regret that I've neglected my blog this past week in favor of gardening, yard work, and spring cleaning. While cleaning out my closets this weekend, I found tons of materials from Religious Right events I've observed for Republic of Gilead. Over the years, I accumulated boxes and bags full of audio CDs, magazines, pamphlets, books, and videos from right-wing events such as the Values Voters Summit, CPAC, CHAP conventions, and Love Won Out. Five years worth of conference materials stunned me -- I simply couldn't believe that I'd attended so many gatherings.

Most of the materials went in the trash, but I held onto the books I'd stashed away in my closets and forgotten. Now, books by Ken Ham, Sean McDowell, C. Peter Wagner, and the (now repentant) Alan Chambers occupy space on my bookshelves, waiting to be read and reviewed at Republic of Gilead.

When I infiltrate future Religious Right gatherings, I will now remember to pick up books and keep my hands off the promotional materials. They accumulate fast!

    1. Sherry -- Well, the yard work and house cleaning couldn't be ignored, but at least it's done now.

    1. Heather -- Gardening definitely is. I love working in the soil and tending seedlings.

  4. I still have a ton of that stuff myself. I love books and hate the thought of throwing them away, but I also feel strongly that some of that stuff is too negative and harmful to give to just anyone.

  5. Ann Coulter, for example. Bible prophecy books is another. This stuff provides nothing useful and the intellectually lazy might even be impressed by them.

  6. What amazes me is that you attend all of these event and still manage to maintain your hope and faith in humanity. How do you do it?

On a gardening note, despite having bird feeders in our yard some unknown feathered culprit just ate our sprouting cucumbers. We may have to take some drastic measures …. chicken wire?

    1. Agi Tater -- That hope is nourished by the many rational, compassionate people who outnumber the fundamentalists. We wouldn't be making social progress if we didn't have them in decent numbers.

For garden pests, I recommend sprinkling chili powder copiously around the perimeter of the garden. You can buy bulk bags at Indian grocery stores, and some supermarkets carry them too in their international food aisles.
